So many of us were taught to always put others first. That somehow putting ourselves first is selfish.
There is a clear distinction to be made here, because there is a difference between being selfish and self-focused. In order to maintain sustained recovery, it is absolutely crucial to put yourself first. Putting yourself first allows you to focus on what is most important in your recovery. It is perfectly fine to focus on you.
When you focus on yourself and what you need to do to take care of yourself, it builds strength and confidence in character, self esteem and therefore your recovery.
Make no mistake, there is certainly nothing wrong with being thoughtful and aware of others needs and feelings. In fact, that is a wonderful character trait. In recovery, though, it can cause difficulty when you put others needs first to the exclusion of your own. It just may surprise you when you focus on yourself, it will free other you care about most to take care of themselves, which is the way it should be.
Be good to yourself and strengthen your recovery. Self care begins at home. Keep your recovery strong by putting the oxygen mask on yourself first and then passing it along to another.
