Accountability in Recovery, and American Idol

You've got to have accountability to have recovery. This goes for economic recovery, or anything else. (Who is holding the banks responsible for the loans?) This should have been a strong contractual agreement in the current national recovery plan. With consequences.

In our own recovery, accountability can also be seen as taking 100% responsibility. We are accountable for our own patterns and feelings, our woundings and their healings.

Watching American Idol last night, the question of accountability again came up.

Idol reported with glory last year that they raised $70million in their "Idol Gives Back" fundraising event. Many people donated to the cause. To the plight of those lives for which a simple 10-cent mosquito net could save life.

Last night, Idol reported that they sent out 300,000 mosquito nets. They were very self-glorifying, complete with celebrity appearances, ok, I get it, celebrity can raise alot of money, and that's a good thing. However, to those who actually do the leg work, and for those who have been doing the real work in these areas for years, it was a little annoying. But still, they raised alot of money, and keep putting greater causes into the mainstream, and that is good. It is about time.

However, I couldn't help but wonder... 70-million-dollars raised... 300,000 nets delivered... 10cents a net.....

What happened to the rest of the $70mill?

Maybe there is an honorable answer. I don't know. They didn't account for it.

Simply recovery.

(btw. I hope it comes down to Adam and Chris tonite. would love to see an Adam win, eh? - hey, it doesn't mean I don't like them!)

we actually had people appear on the Oprah show here last year just to announce that they had made a donation. I guess it was their first time ever or something. Actress Drew Barrymore was one of them. The show was even advertised as "Drew Barrymore's big give." She came on the show, announced she gave $100,000 to a charity. She even literally said, "I wanted to come to share what I did." Then she had a friend, Cameraon Diaz, phone in and say "isn't she great?" and then she left with a big smile on her face. That was it! It was sooooo nauseating. I even have trouble watching her movies today. Not kidding.

I like Bono. And acknowledge also the people who are giving from their hearts everyday who don't need to make it about them.

whew, good to get that one off my chest! lol.

Hi Alexa,

I can really see where you're coming from when you mention how celebrity can be powerful when raising funds for charity but how it can be self-glorifying. Bono once said how important it was to give to charity but that if people talk about it and use it for gratification from others then it just becomes PR. I agree with him.
Every year we have a 'Children in Need' appeal here in the U.K - packed with celebrities giving cheques and people applauding them. Every year there will be a cheque for £1 million from an anonymous businessman from England. Or the funding for a new centre for disabled children from an anonymous donor. These people have humility and lack ego and have it so right. A british actress called Wendy Richard died earlier this year. A chat show host who interviewed her last year said that she gave large sums of money to an animal rescue centre regularly but asked for it not to be made public. It was something she didn't need recognition for. No ego, just compassion. It's great to hear of the American Idol team donating, but I'd be a lot more impressed if I'd heard about it in the future and not from them.

So Kris walked away with the American Idol title. He's the lovely boy-next-door type with a great voice and a lovely smile. Adam has a unique talent and makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up when he gets those high notes. Both men have a God-given talent and I'm sure they'll be around for a long time to come.
