Question:

Many self help books suggest not to pay attention to unwanted things as the law of attraction states, the universe will bring exactly those into life. So how is it that when I'm meditating, it helps to get relief from discomfort and pain by rather focusing my attention to the body parts that is hurting? I don't necessarily picture myself feeling better or pretend to feel better while I focus my energy on my ailment. My question is, if I can cure my ailment by focusing my attention to it, can I also do the same by paying attention to the unwanted things in my life and release them?

Answer:

It’s important to clarify that silent meditation is primary concerned with developing self-realization and removing the impediments to that experience. It is not about using the law of attraction. When you are meditating you are only instructed to put your attention on physical discomfort in the body if your mind is so distracted by the sensation that it is not easy to continue thinking the mantra. So you are not directing where your attention is going because of something that you want to heal; you are only responding to a condition that arises on its own.

In such a situation, this indicates that your meditation practice has brought up some very deep conditioning to be released. The bodily discomfort is your organism’s way of working to restore balance and health. By putting your attention on the physical aspect of the release process you protect your psychology from getting wrapped up in the drama and emotionality of the old feelings associated with the trauma, but also using your mind to simply be with the sensation supports the release process and ensures that it is thorough and complete.

This is a different process than dealing with unwanted thoughts when you are using the law of attraction to manifest a desired outcome. If you want to focus on curing a specific ailment through the law of attraction, then you are better off cultivating thoughts, feelings and behavior that reflects the state of health you are looking for. There are, of course, many other healing practices that you can use that may incorporate some form of skillfully directing your attention on your illness to heal it, but they don’t necessarily fall into the category of using law of attraction.

strange, I can read that and hear him saying it...

Is the Law of Attraction Absolute?

I hear so many people referring to using it for everything. When I feel sick, the Law of Attraction is not my first thought, making an appointment with my doctor is.

Do you think that some people depend on it to the point of where it has become more of a religion?
Hail the Law of Attraction, because there are so many conflicting ideas, so many different forms of how to use it, so many diverse answers to the same question, does anyone actually know how to use the Law of Attraction at its highest percentage?
I don't doubt the Law of Attraction, but I find ways of using it in my life, not a way of running my life.. hmmmm I wonder if that is the problem...
